Got A Problem - Lets See If We Can Help You

THREADING All Portable Bag Closers thread very similarly.  The thread leaves the cone and will be passed thru the thread eyelet directly above it (1). There may be a second guide just prior to the Tension (2).  Pass the thread around the tension (3) making sure that it sits well between the discs.  Pass the thread thru the next thread guide (4). The Needle bar will have a hole thru the top of it (5). The thread is passed thru this. Next bring the thread down the front plate, passing it thru the thread guides or holes (6) until you reach the needle (7).  Pass the thread thru the needle eye from the outside of the machine to the inside of the arm. Leave 50-60cms of thread loose thru the needle to allow the first stitch to form.               (Back to Top)

NEEDLES   Make sure you have the correct needle type and size for your machine.  If in doubt - ASK !  The needle is the weakest link in the chain, so change it regularly as follows. Unplug your machine and lay it on it's side. Loosen the clamping nut and remove the old needle.   Insert a new needle into the machine as far as it will go into the needle bar.  Make sure that the long groove faces left when viewed from the front of the presser foot and the little recess in the needle faces right (towards the inside of the arm of the machine).  Re-tighten the needle clamp nut.
TIP  Always use a good quality needle such as GROZ BECKERT or SCHMETZ (which are available from us).
At the first sign of a stitching problem, always change the needle.  Bent and contaminated needles are the biggest cause of stitching problems.                                 (Back to Top)

NEEDLE - LOOPER RELATIONSHIP   Often referred to as the 'timing', an exact relationship between the needle and the looper is vital for correct operation of your machine.  Each brand will have it's own system of adjustment, so here is an overview of what to look for.
When the needle is at bottom dead centre, the looper will have completed it's travel backwards.  There will be a distance between the point of the looper and the needle. This is called the 'drop back'.  As the needle starts to rise, the looper moves forward on it's front stroke, passing the needle (in the scarf) as close as possible without actually touching it.   The looper will pass above the eye in the needle by about .5mm, thus picking up the needle thread.    When the needle descends, the looper will either hold the thread loop open, or will move sideways on its 'avoid' motion (depends on brand) to allow the needle to pass into the previous thread loop thus locking the previous stitch.   Each Brand of machine will have it's own method of setting, so please refer to your manufacturers operating handbook for the procedure.                              (Back to Top)

EXCHANGING FEED DOG    Over time friction wears the peaks off the teeth on the Feed Dog and mis-feeding or a irregular stitch size occurs. If this evident, then replacement of the feed dog will be required.    When installing a new feed dog firstly position it correctly onto the feed dog carrier block and just 'nip' the fixing screw. Now set the height of the new Dog. Ensure the peaks of the feed dog teeth are 2.8mm above the throat plate when the feed dog is in it's T.D.C. position.    Finally, tighten the fixing screw.
TIP  If wear is evident on the Feed Dog, check also the underside of the Presser Foot for 'Grooving'.                                (Back to Top)
